What position should I play football?
Hi I live in England and I'm going to play youth football in the summer. I 17 years and played rugby as a flanker or hooker. I am 5 feet 10 inches, 85 kg (188 pounds) and run the 40 yard dash time in 4.9 (slow I know!) However, I am strong and can bench 115 kg squat and 150 kg. So my question is, what job would suit me in football!
If your team is not very big, you might get to play on both offense and defense. However, if there is a lot of guys on your squad, you may need to choose one or the other. You probably already know that you're a defensive or offensive mind Guy (or perhaps a mixture of both). In football, as in most sports, the offense is a little more finesse-oriented, while the defense is usually a little more physical. On offense, you're probably better suited at fullback (FB), halfback (HB – some call this position the ball carrier, RB, or congestion, tuberculosis), or tight end (TE). Given your size and speed, they are all very good options. The HB comes running with the ball, so you should get plenty of action at that position. The FB does a little, but most of the blocks for the RB, so that might be your position if you want to be physical and hit guys. At your level TE age will probably block most of the time, but, according to the attacking style of your team, you may also get to run some lines and catch a few passes. Some of it depends on the level of competition, you'll be playing with. If you play against pretty good competition, you might not be fast enough to be an effective HB. However, in the states, 4.9 speed is pretty good for a RB playing on a team of high school (age ~ 16-18) in a smallish / medium sized city. On defense, you seem suited to defensive end (DE) or linebacker (LB). Defensive plays outside the line. They help fight against RB in the ski area, but their specialty is trying crossing the offensive line to sack the quarterback (QB) plays on it. Linebackers will do much to tackle, and many defensive responsibilities. They may be responsible for stopping running plays, focused on the QB or cover receivers. If you like the idea of attacking others players, either of these positions will be good for that. The main difference is that LBS operate in more space and more open to running field, while fighting mainly lineman opponent throughout the match even in the tightest quarters (like the rugby scrum). So I guess TO is be more like Hooker, fighting in the trenches, while LB is more like a flanker, with more freedom to roam and improvise. your size and speed make you versatile enough to have a beautiful range of choice of position. It's really up to you to decide what you want. Being given that you're new to football, you should probably try some of these positions and see what you like best. And if you have good coaches, they will help put you in position to succeed.
