Outdoors Certifications….?
Soon, I will be going to college to study psych/philosophy. While I’m in school i would like to get certified in some outdoors “sports”. Some of the things i would like to get certified in are scuba diving, rock climbing, kayaking, and sailing. Does anyone have information on these things and how i can achieve these goals while going to college?
Where are you going to school? Inquire at that school about recreational activities. Inquire at the national offices for each sport. The British Canoe Union for kayak. The American Canoe Association for kayak. The usual procedure is to take skill courses in a sport and achieve a set level of competency and then attend an instructor certification course. There are many levels of certiication. Each sport has its own standards.
Competent Crew and Day Skipper courses
The qualification that most charter companies require you to have in order to charter a boat from them is the RYA Day Skipper Practical Certificate. Generally this qualification is recognised all over the world, however, a few charter companies don’t recognise it. Those that don’t recognise this qualification accept instead the International Certificate of Competence (ICC). An ICC can easily be obtained from the RYA by sending off your DS Practical certificate and a small admin fee to the RYA.
To get the DS Practical certificate you need to take a 5 day practical Day Skipper course. This can either be taken over 5 consecutive days or over 2 weekends, one short and one long weekend. To be eligible to take this practical course you need to:
a) Know How to Sail a Bit Already.
If you have taken a 5 day Competent Crew course then you would be fine to go onto do a Day Skipper Practical course. If you have been out with friends/family a lot then it really depends on how much you have participated in actually sailing the boat. If you can sail a triangular course (ie know when and how to tack and gybe and how to set the sails to a ball park setting), know how to raise and lower the sails, know what to do with the mooring lines and fenders when you come alongside and know your knots then you could be deemed to be competent already and could skip the Competent Crew course. If not you should do the 5 day Competent Crew practical course. Like the Day Skipper Practical this can either be taken over 5 consecutive days or over 2 weekends, a short and a long.
b) Have done the Day Skipper Shorebased theory course or have knowledge to the equivalent level.
This course teaches you about navigation, weather, collision regulations and safety. So once you have done the Shorebased course and the Competent Crew course you are then in an excellent position to do the Day Skipper Practical course.
Many people start having done the very excellent RYA Day Skipper Shorebased course wanting to do the Practical course but having not actually done the Competent Crew course. This is fine providing they have sufficient experience to be Competent Crew standard as described above.
To be a Skipper is to take on a very great responsibility. You are responsible for the safety and well being of all those on board and for the yacht. You need to know what you are doing before you can tell other people what to do. We have to learn to walk before we can run.
Course Administrators always try to ensure a person signs up to the correct course. They discuss on the phone the experience they have. It can be difficult without actually sailing with someone to determine if they are already a Competent Crew. Consider someone that has been on 2 weekend trips in the Solent with friends and a week flotilla holiday in the Med. This is a sufficient amount of time on the water to become a Competent Crew but if there was no wind in the Med and they motored all week and the 2 weekend trips in the Solent involved sailing on 1 tack from Hamble to Cowes or Yarmouth and back then whilst it is all good experience it is not sufficient to make someone a Competent Crew.
Learning to be a Skipper is not something that should be rushed or seen as a chore. Of ‘having’ to do courses. The courses are a lot of fun. Just simply being on the water is a lot of fun. You are in the same boat (sorry) as the other people on board and often a great bond forms with our students. They often go on to sail together again.
Derek Rogers is a freelance writer who represents a number of UK businesses. For the very best in RYA Day Skipper Courses he recommends Southampton and London based Sailing School First Class Sailing.
