Tales of yachtsmen sailing the oceans tend to fascinate. They particularly stir the imagination when they are about adventurers doing something that has never been done before. About men making long and dangerous voyages in tiny boats with hardly a navigation aid at their disposal... |

can som1 please help me with this maths equation?
A dinghy has sunk and the survivors are on a life raft. Their distance (in km) from a river estuary is changing as the tide goes out and comes in again. It can be moddelded by the equation d = -x^2 + 3x + 4
where x represents the number of hours since the dinghy sank.
a) how far was the dinghy from the estuary when it sank?
b) Explain what happens to the life raft in the first hour?
c) solve the equations
d) Explain what the positive soloution for this equation represents in this situation
Note: please show working out
d(x) = -x^2 + 3x + 4
a. the answer is simply d(0).
b. sketch the graph... does it curve up then down? then it goes far from the bank then gets near.
c. 0 = x^2 - 3x - 4 {equate to zero, you can also change signs.}
(x-4)(x+1) = 0
thus x = 4 or -1
thus x = 4 hrs
d. the life raft goes to the bank naturally after 4 hrs
Inflatable boats provide an economical and flexible boating option
Boating in placid waters of a lake is a truly delightful experience for people. Nowadays inflatable boats are more widely used compared to traditional boats. Collapsible boats are made from a special type of synthetic rubber that provides high flexibility and strength to withstand rugged use.
The rapid advancements in technology and increasing demand for boats have made it easy for the manufacturers to provide inflatable boats at a cheap price. As a result more and more people are able to buy and use boats of their choice. The inflatable boats come with some salient features that are hard to find in traditional boats.
The collapsible boats have a very low center of gravity, which makes it near impossible for them to capsize. The separate air filled rubber tubes provide very high buoyancy to the boat. Even in case of a puncture of one or more rubber tube the boat does not sink as the other rubber tubes are good enough to keep it afloat. This is a great safety feature that makes inflatable dinghies very favored amongst the lifeguards.
If an overboard motor is attached to the boat then it works wonders for the user. The powered inflatable boats can be easily maneuvered at great speeds and this feature finds its use in special military operations that require stealth and swiftness to execute the operation. The mountain rafters find inflatable boats very useful as they can deflate the boat to carry it through difficult terrain and again inflate it when they reach the rapids of the mountain river.
For the general public too this feature is of great use. Owners of the inflatable boats do not have to worry about paying mooring fees as they can easily carry the deflated boats along with them and inflate it once they reach the seashore or lakeside, where they intend to use it. Thus collapsible boats provide portability and at same time eliminate the need of expenditure towards storing and carrying the boats, as in the case for the traditional boats. To top this all, the collapsible boats have a good resale value because of their durability, which makes them seaworthy for long time.
