What type of surfboard fins should I buy?
Brand new to surfing, but have a hand me down board that needs fins.
FCS attachment, tri fin, but IDK what type, to buy. The board is roughly a 6'4" Matt Kechele stub fish.
I'm a 5'3 Female at about 140 lbs and never surfed, so i'm at a total loss as to what fins to buy.
I'll be learning in the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida Panhandle
Woah, wait a minute there!
When you first start out in surfing, you shouldn't start on a 6'4" and definitely not on your own. Surfing has a lot of baggage that must be considered.
Surfing is an extreme sport so it is pretty dangerous if not learnt correctly!
The best way to do this is to take a few lessons from a professional instructor. Taking lessons is one of the fastest ways to learn how to surf and how to surf safely. As a surfer, the most infuriating thing is having someone who doesn’t know surfing’s unspoken laws getting in the way and rushing into things. You’ll most likely start by walking out waist-deep, turning around then eventually standing up. All of this isn’t learnt on a short board though! Learning on a long-board (preferably a soft board) is a lot easier and makes helps you get the technique down pat. When you understand the ocean, understand surf etiquette and can surf well, then you can turn to thus 6’4” board of yours.
To know which fins to buy, you can’t get answers over the net! The best thing to do is to go to a local surf shop, show them your board and explain to them what you want to get out of it. They will help you out and point you into the right direction. Even if someone was to tell you which type of fins to buy, there are many different sizes and some boards require screw in fins while others require stick on fins.
